In-Lecture Exercise E

For this week’s exercise, we were tasked to comment on this typographic representation. After analyzing the typographic representation, I have noticed three main issues - choice of typeface, alignment, and readability.

1. Choice of typeface

The choice of typefaces used is too decorative which made it quite unclear and illegible. Not only that, the choice of typefaces used for the header and body are also too similar which does not establish a clear hierarchy between the header and the body. This makes it difficult to read and does not capture the attention of the readers.

I would improve this by choosing a font like Sans-serif which is easier to read compared to the typeface used in the image. Sans-serif also helps the readers’ eyes to travel across the sentence lines which makes the words more legible. I would also choose 2 contrasting typefaces for the header and paragraph body. The contrast in the typefaces would help to establish a clear hierarchy between the header and body. This helps to guide the readers into reading the words from top to bottom, which is from the header to the body and makes it easier for the readers to read through.

2. Alignment
Another issue with this typographic representation is that the paragraph body is center-aligned. This leads to an inconsistent starting point in each line which forces the readers to put more effort into finding out the starting position of each line. Hence, making it very difficult to read the paragraph body.
I would improve this typographic representation by aligning the paragraph body to the left. This makes it easier to read because there is a straight left edge aligned with the paragraph body. Readers can easily read each line by moving their eyes to the left edge of the next line.

      3. Readability

One other issue with this typographic representation is that it has bad readability. All of the text in the image is in capital letters, which makes it very difficult to read. The shape contrast between each word is decreased tremendously which makes it more difficult for readers to recognize each character or word.

I would improve this by using title case capitalization instead. This creates greater shape contrast between the words and makes the text easier to read as readers can better identify the words by their shape.

Another issue is that there is no paragraphing in the subject body of the typographic representation. The subject body is in one paragraph which makes the text less easily digested as information is presented in one huge chunk of text.

I would improve the typographic representation by paragraphing the subject body. This helps to structure and organize the information presented in the text for the readers and better allows the readers to follow the chain of thought presented in the texts.
