Assignment #3 - Information Design

Research & Ideation

For this assignment, we were tasked to create an infographic to create a visual representation of the data and information that we are working with. As I have recently read up about FinTech, I decided to create an infographic related to digital payments. Hence, I went to research more about digital payments in Singapore and to find statistics related to it. After some research, I will be using a total of six sources for my infographic. These are the data and statistics:

  1. The penetration rate of mobile wallets in Singapore reached 30.4%
    1. I will be representing this data as “3 out of 10 people” instead of listing out as a percentage.
  2. 3.34 million users of digital payment in Singapore
  3. The total transaction value in the digital commerce sector in Singapore reached 13.69 billion SGD
  4. For Digital Payment methods, a total of 56% of users choose Card, 20% choose Digital Wallet, 12% use Bank Transfer and 12% use other forms of payment methods
  5. The top four digital wallets in Singapore are: GrabPay, FavePay, PayLah, and Singtel Dash (in order of decreasing popularity)

Infographic Sketches

For my sketches, I actually made two versions of the infographic as I was not satisfied with the first version.

This is my initial version:

In this initial version, I felt that I was dumping in too many statistics without putting a focus on anything. Hence, I have removed some of the pie charts and statistics in the last row of the sketch. I also found the sketch too structured without enough variations in shapes and layouts. Hence, I redid my sketch and came up with my final version.

This is my final version:

In my final version, I also added an illustration of a person holding a phone with his digital wallet displaying on the screen, and am planning to make use of circles (or rather a quarter of a circle) to make my infographic layout more interesting.

I am also planning for my poster to have a green colour scheme as green is usually associated with growth, wealth and stability in relation to digital payments.

Adobe Workspace

In order to create my icons and illustrations, I made use of the shapes tool, pen tool, and anchor point tool in Adobe Illustrator.

I also made different versions of my infographic in order to determine which one looks better and help to deliver my message and statistics better. Below are some screenshots of my process of developing the infographic:

Critiques and Feedback

I had two rounds of feedback with my friends before the critique session and I went to ask them on Telegram.

Feedback Round 1

For the first round of feedback, I used this version of my infographic and asked my friend for feedback:

And this are the feedback that I got:

In summary, my friend suggested that:

  1. If I wanted to emphasize the ranking, I could put emphasis on the hierarchy by varying the sizes of the ranking numbers or icons
  2. I could add a border to the title
  3. I could section the middle part of my infographic differently by grouping the icons and percentages together, rather than sectioning them separately

I did not take up the first suggestion as I did not find it necessary to vary the sizes of my numbers or icons to emphasize the ranking as I felt that showing the ranking via numbers and a top-down approach were sufficient. I took up the second suggestion by adding a dotted line on the bottom of my title so that the poster looked more segmented and users would be able to read the poster easier. I also took up the third suggestion and grouped my icons and data of the breakdown of the various digital payment methods together.

Thereafter, I went to revise my infographic and asked another group of friends for feedback using the new version of the infographic.

Feedback Round 2

This is the new version that I used to ask for feedback:

These are the screenshots of the feedback that I got:

In summary, my second group of friends suggested that:

  1. I could increase the font size to emphasize the different proportions of digital payment methods —> about the hierarchy
  2. The bottom half is taking up too much space and the bottom left illustrations could be smaller as it does not really serve to deliver any message
  3. I could add a short header for the ranking of the digital wallet applications such as “2022 Top Digital Payment Mobile Apps”
  4. I could add a short header for the middle section of data such as “Digital Payment Penetration”

I took up all four of the feedback from my second group of friends. For pointer 1, I also received this feedback from my first round of feedback from my friends. Hence, I realized that it is a very important factor and decided to make the ranking of the top digital wallets more obvious by using 3D-looking rectangles to resemble podiums. I took up the feedback for pointer 2 and removed some unnecessary illustrations at the bottom left and made the remaining illustrations smaller. For pointers 3 and 4, I added headers for each section to make the purpose of the statistics clearer. Additionally, I wanted to make my infographic easier to read and increased the kerning of the words in my infographic as the words seemed to be a little cramped up.

Critique Session

During the critique session, I received these feedback from my classmates:

  1. Overall, the visual hierarchy of my infographic is not clear. Hence, I need to edit my infographic and make it clear what I want the audience to focus on first when they look at my infographic.
  2. For the top section of the infographic showing the general statistics, I can remove redundant words such as “of” and make sure the spacing for my elements is even.
  3. For the middle section of the infographic showing the Digital Payment Penetration Rate, I should make the color scheme of my four icons consistent.

I made changes to my infographic and took up all of the feedback pointers. I took up feedback pointer 1 by editing the headers of my infographic. I have received feedback from my classmates that when they first view the infographic, they see the middle header first. After the critique, I decided that it was better and clearer to have the audience focus on the top of my infographic first, and view it from a top-down perspective. Hence, I changed the header at the top to emphasize it more and edited the visual hierarchy to be top-down. This allows the information flow to be clearer as the statistics presented will flow from a more generic to a more specific segment of digital payments from the top to the bottom of my infographic. I took up feedback pointer 2 so that my infographic is cleaner and looks more aligned. I took up feedback pointer 3 by changing the color scheme of my card and digital wallet icons to contain more green color, as green is my main color scheme.

Changes Made

These are the changes made after the critique session:

  1. Made the visual hierarchy clearer by editing the headers. Visual hierarchy is now top-down.
  2. For the top section of the infographic showing the general statistics, I removed redundant words such as “of” and make sure the spacing for my elements are even.
  3. For the middle section of the infographic showing the Digital Payment Penetration Rate, I made the color scheme of my four icons consistent by editing the left two icons.

Final Infographic

This is the final version of my infographic after many iterations:

I added a rounded rectangle as a border for my infographic to resemble a tablet or phone. This Is to signify digital payments as they are usually done through a mobile device.

The top of my infographic shows general statistics on digital payment. The middle section shows the penetration rate of digital payment. The bottom of my infographic shows the ranking of the top digital wallets in Singapore. Thereafter, from the top to the bottom of my infographic, the statistics go from general to specific data related to a particular category of digital payment. I chose to zoom into digital wallets at the bottom of my infographic as digital wallets are one of the top growing trends in digital payment. I wanted to illustrate this trend to the audience by purposely focusing on digital wallets at the end of my infographic and making them notice their popularity.

The curves at the bottom left of my infographic are meant to signify and resemble the contactless payment logo and appear to be “coming out” of the phone that the person is holding. Hence, the illustration is meant to depict the person using his digital wallet to pay for items and is closely related to the statistics right beside it, which is the Top Digital Wallets.

Overall, this assignment was the most time-consuming, difficult but rewarding assignment out of all three. I went through the most number of iterations for this assignment compared to the other two and learned more through this process. I made use of layout, composition, typography, color and design principles that I have learned in lecture. I definitely improved my Adobe Illustrator skills and understand more about the process behind creating a visual design. Most importantly, I really enjoyed this process! :D
