In-Lecture Exercise D
For this in-lecture exercise, I have chosen my Crayon ShinChan figurine to be the chosen subject and I have taken five different shots of my figurine.
For the 1st image, I made use of a long shot, low angle shot and rule of thirds. Long shot is used as I wanted to show my figurine from a distance, while emphasising the location which is the table. The low angle shot helped to make my figurine look more powerful and heroic despite doing a relaxing task like having a sauna session. I wanted to have this contrast to highlight the nature of the activity that my figurine is engaging in, which is very relaxing, modest and soothing. The rule of thirds is achieved by aligning the figurine at the right vertical grid line which draws audiences’ eyes into the image and highlights the figurine.
For the 2nd image, I made use of a mid shot, eye-level shot and rule of thirds as well. Mid shot is used as I wanted to emphasise my figurine while showing some of the surroundings. Since it is an eye-level shot, it has a neutral effect on the audience. I also achieved the rule of thirds by aligning the figurine at the right vertical grid line which helps direct audiences’ eyes to the figurine on the right.
For the 3rd image, I made use of a mid shot, low angle shot and rule of thirds. I used mid shot as I wanted to highlight both my figurine and the surroundings by giving them equal space in the frame. The low angle shot emphasises the power and strength of my figurine. The rule of thirds was also used by aligning the figurine at the right vertical grid line to make the figurine the main focal point.
For the 4th image, I made use of a close up and high angle shot. The close up help to reveal details and highlight the characteristics of my figurine such as the placement of the towel on the head or positions of its arms. The high angle shot made the figurine look more vulnerable which complements the activity that my figurine is engaging in, which is having a sauna session. This further highlights the nature of taking a sauna sessions as subjects taking a sauna bath would usually be in a vulnerable state physically. The subject is centered as I wanted to make the photo more symmetrical.
For the 5th image, I made use of an extreme close up and eye-level shot. The extreme close up help to emphasise a small area of my figurine which is the head area and the towel placed on top of the head. I aim to capture the main facilitating object, the towel, that is helping my figurine with its task of having a sauna session. The eye-level shot has a neutral effect on the audience. I also centered the subject since it is an extreme close up, there are no other elements in the photo that would bring the audiences’ attention away from the figurine.
